karmic Steel Orchestra

Karmic Steel Orchestra

Many of you may wonder why the name Karmic, seeing that it is not an ordinary word. Well, this steel orchestra is far from ordinary. With a mission to provide a total music experience for individuals and communities across Barbados and the region by demonstrating the highest standards of panmanship and discipline, Karmic sees itself becoming a key participant in the development of a vibrant and sustainable steel pan community in Barbados.

Since its inception in May 2008, Karmic has gathered together some of the most talented young musicians in Barbados. These young persons span across secondary and tertiary level institutions, but all come together to create the largest steel orchestra in Barbados at present. Under the Musical Directorship of Mr. David “Ziggy” Walcott, a remarkable musician and arranger, this high energy group of young people has performed at the highest level. With the ability to learn two or more challenging songs in one night, this group of gifted individuals form a “tight” steel orchestra. You will surely be captivated by the high energy performances and the high skill level of this professional group.

Karmic Steel Orchestra is not to be seen as just another steel band. It is an organization with goals and objectives some of which include developing well rounded musicians and honing the management and leadership skills of all members. Some of Karmic's activities include local and regional performances, training programmes in music theory and practical, personal development, varied social activities and the facilitation of music examinations for members.

During Crop Over 2008, Karmic hosted its inaugural Panyard Lime. The Orchestra performed with some of Barbados' best and upcoming calypsonians including Biggie Irie, Nard, Jon Mahameed and Bobo. This event looks set to become a permanent fixture on the Crop Over calendar.

Not one to rest on its laurels, the young orchestra also spread its wings to Antigua to take part in that country's panorama Finals. The members were the guests of Ebonites Steel Orchestra and they jumped and jammed their way into third position in the Panorama Final. Not bad for the then three month old group!

In October 2008, Karmic took the delegates of the CAPAM Conference on a Steel Pan Learning Journey. The delegates were tasked to form a steel band and perform one song for the rest of the delegation. With the help of the Karmic players, the delegates not only learnt the song “Big Bamboo”, but they were also able to play an encore! Way to go!

Karmic sees only great things in the future and given the meaning of 'Karmic' – it is inevitable that we will be excellent at we do!
